Street art, or Urban art as a more inclusive term, has a lot of potential as a decorative part of contemporary urban planning due to its more free and varied nature than Public art. That said, Urban art tends to be overlooked by researchers because of the heavy influence of subculture, after all, graffiti and street art began as a big and important part of hip-hop culture (but it wasn’t exclusive for hip-hop). However, this ties to subculture are what makes Urban art a good alternative to Public art: media-culture references are understandable to all and so it doesn’t require extensive knowledge of art history and previous works of the artist to understand its meaning. This connection to the general public is, in my opinion, worth investigating further.
Also, what makes Urban art, especially street art, a new and interesting alternative for aesthetic transformation of urban space is its ephemerality. Meaning, works of street art and graffiti have no protection from nature and human factor; the paint can fade, posters and stickers can be ripped off, installations can be taken apart, leaving the space bare for use again. This way Urban art gets a chance for renewal, changing the face of the streets in a new way each time and giving urban space a sense of adventure it usually lacks.
In conclusion, my area of interests lies within the possibilities of Urban art to transform the public space in ways that Public art cannot due to some artistic freedoms and characteristics.
